Steam, itch.io or Nutaku? Adult Game Buying Guide

Compare adult game purchases on Steam, itch.io and Nutaku: downloads, virtual currency, recurring costs and refund rules before choosing where to buy.

by NSFW-Tools Team · 5 min read

Choosing where to buy an adult game depends partly on how you want to pay. A one-time download, a free-to-start game with paid currency and a recurring currency subscription are not equivalent purchases. Compare the actual entitlement, supported device and refund conditions before comparing the headline price.

This is a buying-model comparison for adults, not a ranking of individual games or explicit content. We reviewed official documentation on 30 October 2026. We did not purchase or play games for this article. NSFW-Tools may earn a commission through commercial links in its tool reviews.

This shortlist is based on documented purchase mechanics. It does not mean every game on a store is good value, compatible with your device or available in your region.

Steam: understand which purchase the refund rule covers

Steam's standard policy generally permits a refund for a game bought through its store within 14 days and with less than two hours played. Different conditions apply to items such as in-game purchases and subscriptions. Purchases made outside Steam, including third-party keys, are not refunded by Valve. Requests outside ordinary limits can still be reviewed. Source: Steam refund policy.

That distinction matters when two sellers advertise the same title. A lower-priced activation key bought elsewhere is not automatically covered by the store's direct-purchase policy.

Before buying, separate the base game from downloadable content and optional purchases. Check the game's current system requirements and supported operating systems. A familiar storefront does not establish that a particular title runs well on your laptop or handheld.

itch.io: check the minimum price and the actual files

itch.io's purchase system lets buyers pay above a seller's minimum. Individual files can require a higher payment, and the purchase leads to a dedicated download page. An account is optional, with purchases associated with an email address. Source: itch.io buying documentation.

Look closely at what each payment amount unlocks. A download, soundtrack, additional chapter and bundle may have different inclusion rules. Paying for a game on itch.io does not automatically include its Steam version; a key must be part of the particular offer. Source: accessing an itch.io purchase.

Its refund terms cover circumstances such as inaccessible content, technical problems and products that do not match their description. Technical issues may first be referred to the developer. Do not assume Steam's playtime rule applies here. Source: itch.io refund terms.

Nutaku: separate Gold from the thing you want to buy

Nutaku's terms describe Gold as currency for games, items and activities. They also distinguish subscriptions from Auto Reload: cancelling a subscription does not cancel an active Auto Reload arrangement. The terms state that Gold expires after 365 days, with a new purchase extending the balance's expiry. Source: Nutaku terms.

This creates more than one budgeting decision. First, determine the price of the item or game in Gold. Then calculate the cash needed to obtain enough Gold. Finally, check whether the transaction also enables recurring purchases.

The in-game purchase FAQ states that item and currency charges are non-refundable and directs delivery discrepancies to the developer. The full terms include qualifications and applicable withdrawal provisions, so do not treat that FAQ as removing every consumer right. Source: Nutaku in-game purchase help.

A simple comparison that avoids misleading prices

Imagine two hypothetical offers. One is a $15 download. The other is free to start but the feature you want requires a $10 currency package. Neither is automatically better.

For the download, ask whether the content is complete, compatible and included permanently under the purchase terms. For the currency-based game, ask what the package buys, whether that benefit is consumed and how likely you are to buy again. These illustration amounts are not current prices from any store.

Your useful comparison is the cost of your intended use, not merely the entry price. A zero-cost download can still involve optional spending. A paid download can still offer additional purchases. Read the game's own description rather than inferring its entire business model from the storefront.

Five checks before choosing a store

  1. Device: confirm the exact operating system and hardware requirements for the game.
  2. Entitlement: identify the base game, extras, updates and any activation key included.
  3. Payment model: separate one-time payment, consumable currency and recurring charges.
  4. Recovery: keep receipts, download links and account access information securely.
  5. Refund route: identify the seller responsible before buying, especially with external keys.

Frequently asked questions

Does an itch.io purchase include a Steam key?

Only when the specific offer says so. A game appearing on both stores does not establish that either purchase includes access through the other.

Does cancelling Nutaku's subscription stop Auto Reload?

Not according to its published terms. Treat them as separate settings and verify both if you want to stop recurring currency purchases.

Which store is cheapest?

There is no defensible universal answer. Compare the same game or intended benefit, including extras, currency requirements and recurring charges. Store-wide labels hide those differences.
